Therapies Practised Osteopathy is a holistic (whole body) approach to health care. Naturally the osteopath will treat the specific problem but in order to do that, they may need to balance all the systems within the body. This is because if one part of the body is restricted, the rest of the body will adapt to compensate for it.
This in turn may lead to other problems such as inflammation, pain and stiffness. That is why osteopaths believe it is necessary to treat and strengthen the joints, muscles and spine in order to positively affect the body's nervous, circulatory and lymphatic systems. A broad range of techniques can be used, all of which will complement the advice given by your GP.
Training for osteopathy is a 4 year, full time course and once qualified, osteopaths are required by law to register with the General Osteopathic Council. This body ensures the highest standards of practice and conduct amongst its members and regulates the profession. Each year, it is necessary for an osteopath to attend 30 hours of lectures in order to re-register, so ensuring that the highest standards are continually met.
